Q. I was worried about drying my nails with a lamp or light box at the nail salon because of the potential risk of cancer from the ultraviolet radiation, but my salon recently switched to LED lamps. Are they safer
Today we're going to talk about lamps, specifically Gelish's professional, high-performing LED lamps. A lamp is a must-have when it comes to gel nails because it's the key to curing the polish. An LED lamp works by emitting wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation that hit molecules called photoinitiators that are in the gel polish. These molecules absorb the light, which then causes the polish to harden. So unlike lacquer, where you have to wait in real time for the polish to completely dry, gel manicures are \"dry\" once they are cured under the lamp.
In terms of the equipment, when we first started the best lamp tested was the CND UV Lamp. The lamp used four 9-watt compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) for a total of 36 watts to cure the gel. The CFL bulbs are the long round tube-like bulbs that are inserted into the lamp.
We are now testing LED lamps at the salon and have been using the CND LED Lamp and Gelish LED 18G Plus. Below is a comparison matrix and quick summary of each lamp to help assist you in selecting the best lamp for your needs.
